General Tso is so NOT a Threat...

Grandma is very concerned with the quantity of "orientals" in this country.  I've sat through numerous lectures about immigrants this and illegals that.  So-and-so and their green-card wife, her very dear friends who are the proud grandparents of adopted asian babies ("VERY wanted children", also her by-line for couples who use IVF, more specifically, babies with two mommies, about which she's also very concerned.)

All these "orientals!"  In OUR country!  She's been pre-occupied with this for YEARS.  So when she took a different tack the other evening I was agog.  That's right.  A-gog.

Grandma has recently become very upset at the prospect of our Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian (you name it!) populations LEAVING the US!  Somebody on TV was shouting about China's advancement in the global economy and so Grandma walks away with the impression that China is out to "get" us.  Not only THAT but she read somewhere that our intellectual capital will be significantly depleted once China will be able to pay a competitive wage.  "China is trying to be SUPREME!" she wails!  What ever shall we do?

I probably didn't help matters much when I suggested that many of these individuals were better prepared for their American post-secondary education given their superior Asian training and the fact that they're probably more desirable students considering the sad state that American primary and secondary education is in these days (years?)

She was also probably quite dismayed when I implied that, by virtue of the fact that we are a democratic and capitalist society we are therefore encouraging both equality and competition, and it serves us right!

She's studying up on her Kung Pao as we speak.
